25 Days of Christmas Cookies: Orange Cut Outs and a Cookie Decorating Extravaganza

A second cookie recipe for you today. Bonus! My mom, sister Cathy, and I iced cut out cookies today, using this recipe. We spent five hours icing, sprinkling colored sugars and my mom’s favorite: adding edible glitter. 

I iced the sugar cookies. Here are some of them:

Last week we made orange cut out cookies. The recipe is from the St. John’s Parish Cookbook from 1966. The recipe was submitted by Mrs. Irene Williquette.
Orange Cut Outs
1/2 cup Earth Balance margarine
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
5 tbsp soy yogurt
1/4 cup orange juice
1 1/2 tsp orange zest
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
Cream margarine, shortening and sugar. Beat in soy yogurt, orange juice and zest, and vanilla. When smooth, Mix in the dry ingredients. Refrigerate dough for at least two hours. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. Bake on a parchment lined cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack, before icing. Store in an airtight container.

The cookies are shown on my mom’s china, which is called Moon Mist. My mom bought it one place setting at a time from the Red Owl grocery store that used to be in our neighborhood. I love it very much!
